Indications
Loteprednol Gel is used to relieve post-operative inflammation and discomfort after ophthalmic surgery. Allergic conjunctivitis, acne rosacea, superficial punctate keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, iritis, and cyclitis are examples of steroid-responsive inflammatory diseases affecting the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior region of the eyeball.
Pharmacology
Loteprednol is a corticosteroid that is hypothesized to work by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, which limit the release of arachidonic acid, which controls the production of powerful inflammatory mediators such prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Contraindications
Most viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva are contraindicated. It's also not recommended for those who have a known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of the components in this product, as well as other corticosteroids.
Side Effects
Glaucoma with optic nerve damage, visual acuity, and field defects; cataract development; secondary eye infection as a result of the host's immune system being suppressed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no clinical data for usage in pregnancy. Loteprednol Etabonate does not appear to transfer into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Only for ophthalmic use.
Intraocular pressure should be monitored if this product is used for more than 10 days.
Fungal infections of the cornea are more likely to occur when a steroid is used topically for a long time.
Long-term use of corticosteroids can cause glaucoma, which can cause optic nerve damage, visual acuity and field abnormalities, and posterior subcapsular cataract development.
The use of corticosteroids in the treatment of people who have had herpes simplex needs extreme care.
